First, you have to decide whether you need a car. Lanai
actually has better public transportation for its hotel guests
than any other Hawaiian island. A shuttle bus goes from the Four
Seasons Lanai Manele Bay via Lanai City to the Lodge at Koele and
back. The bus runs frequently and is free to guests of the
hotels. Another shuttle bus can take you to and from the
airport. The island also has a few taxicabs. As we said on our island
overview page, some Lanai visitors don’t care about exploring
the remote parts of the island. They are happy to enjoy activities
at the resorts and perhaps take a walk around Lanai City. If that
describes you, don’t bother renting a car.
However, if our description of Lanai’s
attractions has piqued your interest in exploring, you will
want to rent a car. You could rent a standard passenger car (not
4 wheel drive), but we don’t see much point in it, since it
would merely give you more flexibility in traveling between the
hotels and into town, and allow you to drive to (but not on) the
road to Shipwreck Beach and Keomuku. So we recommend you rent a
4-wheel-drive vehicle, which on Lanai almost always means a Jeep
Wrangler, but you do have the option of other car types as well.
